Malaysian blogger arrested and goes on hunger strike; Could this happen to the Philippines?

May 9, 2008 | Leave a Comment

A 57-year old Malaysian blogger (Raja Petra Kamaruddin) was arrested for writing an article implicating a top official (Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak) to the murder of a Mongolian woman (Altantuya Shaariibuu), and soon after began a hunger strike in jail. Inquirer has picked up this news item and it’s now circling around the local blogosphere.

Do Filipino bloggers worry that what they write could lead them to their arrest, torture, even salvage? We’re all familiar with stories about the families of activists, journalists, and witnesses crying for the justice never given to them after their loved ones’ threats, arrests, disappearances, and deaths. It’s happened way too many times in this country.

Could Philippine bloggers be next?

what are you kidding me? who cares about filipino bloggers? I don’t care, majority of the filipino are poor enough to have access to internet and read blogs, politicians are not interested… the filipino bloggers and their blogs circulate only to those people in the media who unfortunately can write blogs… the fact is people are not reading it, politicians don’t read it….

oh come on… please be realistic here…

It depends on the effort the authorities will put in indentifying the owner of the blog. With our current technology, I think it’s still safe. I may be underestimating their capabilities, but hey, we are in the Philippines. The owner of gadget shop probably has more access to intelligence than the higher ups in the government.

Our politicians are too old to know what blog anyway…
