May 1 is RSS Day

RSS Awareness Day

May 1 may be more famous in the Philippines as Labor Day, but on the other side of the world, a campaign to raise awareness about RSS is also happening today.

As bloggers we should have an idea of what RSS is. It stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a feed format “used to deliver information from websites and pages that get updated regularly”. To read more about it, simply visit RSSDay.org for some helpful demos.

If you’re an expert at it already, be sure to visit the Spread the word! page and tell your blog readers about this awesome technology they may not be even aware of! Technically, RSS is just one of several formats for your blog feed, but as this campaign shows, RSS is clearly the most popular one.

Happy RSS Day everyone!

  1. JC John SESE Cuneta Said,

Well, for any Standards-nerd, Atom 1.0 is the choice, Atom is ‘a’ and ‘the’ standard. ;)

They should have created “XML Feed Day” instead of RSS Day, more powerful, more neutral, and will garner more attention and support. Example, the “FEED Icon” is neutral, it wasn’t called as “RSS Icon” like what they did on their campaign site, trying hard to own a neutral icon.

I won’t support them. From reading their site, I can sense a strong sentiment of being anti-Atom format. It’s the usual “format wars”. Coz, if RSS is as popular as pro-RSS people claim, then what’s the point of campaigning for it? And why try to own the “Feed” Icon as an “RSS Icon”? It’s just a campaign about ‘format wars’. If the campaign is about information and education – target: non-techie people, then they should have called it the XML Feed Awareness Campaign.

I chose Atom, not just because it’s the standard, but because of other important features and matters as well (too long to write here). I will only support Atom or “Neutral” campaigns ;)

Anyway, thanks for the heads up :p

Hi JC, I complained about this the RSS bias in Wisdump (linked to it in the post). I still haven’t found a valid reason for it. On the bright side, at least there’s some advocacy for awareness.

  3. Lester Cavestany Said,

I’d have to agree with JC too. It should’ve been “Feeds Day” except that it doesn’t sound too techy.. it’s almost like it has something to do with world hunger or the poultry business.. Any ideas?

  7. Sophia Lucero Said,

Lester, ewan, wala na akong maisip especially since they don’t care about the general idea of feeds rather than RSS alone.
